America's Historically Black Colleges and Universities answered the call for people of color to be afforded a quality education in a dark period of American history when many public colleges prohibited their enrollment. Flourishing on their own terms, West Virginia's HBCUs were the product of some of the greatest minds of the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the schools struggle to maintain a large diversity, but their heritage always keeps them grounded in their important role in academic history.
