When some of the first Europeans arrived in North America, they came to find gold. The Appalachee Natives in modern day Florida pointed them to the mountains north of them. It was this same quest that caused the governor of the colony of Virginia to send German Johann Lederer into the mountains, but instead, the first European to explore West Virginia, returned with a treasure trove of information and maps.
